New Year’s Resolutions for Dogs

Happy New Year! As we move into a brand new year, many people are setting personal objectives for the coming 12 months. If Man’s Best Friend could make a list of resolutions, what do you think would be on it? Here, a Lansing, MI vet offers a few suggestions, and offer tips on ways to help Fido achieve those goals.

I Will Stop Chasing The Cat

Fluffy and Fido have had a long and rather tumultuous relationship. While some kitties are best buds with their canine companions, this isn’t always the case. If your dog just can’t resist chasing the kitty, ask your vet or a professional behaviorist for advice. In the meantime, make sure your feline friend has a safe hiding spot in every room.

I Will Not Eat Furniture

Have you ever come home to find that Fido chewed up your couch cushions? There are many possible reasons for this behavior, ranging from separation anxiety to simple boredom. Make sure your furry friend has plenty of fun toys and is getting enough exercise. If the issue continues, ask your vet for advice.

I Will Come When Called

Does your dog completely ignore you when you call him, unless he thinks you have a treat for him? If so, Fido may need more training. This can be a dangerous habit! Enroll your pup in obedience school or doggy day care.

I Will Stop Jumping On Visitors

Man’s Best Friend has many adorable habits, and a few bad ones. Jumping on people is a common behavioral issue in dogs. This can actually be quite dangerous. Consult your vet or a professional dog behaviorist for advice on improving your canine pal’s petiquette.

I Will Stop Begging

Fido is a very talented little actor, and is extremely skilled at getting us to hand over tasty treats. At the end of the day, this is bad doggy manners! This one is really on you, since it’s your decision whether or not to offer your pet extra snacks at dinnertime. If you can’t resist those pleading eyes, give your canine buddy a healthy snack, like a carrot or string bean. Or, put your theatrical pet in his crate with a fun puzzle toy during meals.
